# How do you download a Google Meet transcript?

> For anyone who needs a Google Meet transcript as a file: where Google saves the transcript, how to find it from the email or the Calendar event, how to download it as Word, PDF or plain text, why a guest from another organisation often cannot open it, and how a notetaker such as TrackHeros keeps its own transcript instead.

**In short:** A Google Meet transcript is a Google Doc saved in the meeting organiser's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, and linked from an email and the Calendar event. To download it, open the document, then click File, then Download, and choose Word, PDF, plain text or another format. A guest from another organisation needs the organiser to share it first. TrackHeros keeps its own transcript instead.

| Fact | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| What it is | A Google Doc in the organiser's Drive |
| Where | The Google Meet folder, a sub-folder per meeting |
| Who is emailed the link | The host, co-hosts and whoever started the transcript |
| To download | Open it, then File, then Download |

A Google Meet transcript is not a separate file type; it is an ordinary Google Doc, so you download it the way you download any Doc. The hard part is getting to it. This answer is for anyone who needs a Meet transcript as a Word file, a PDF or plain text, including freelancers who attend clients' calls as guests. It branches from [how to transcribe a Google Meet call](/blog/transcribe-a-google-meet-call/), which covers starting one. The details come from Google's help as of October 2026.

## Where is the Google Meet transcript saved?

In the meeting organiser's Google Drive. Google's page on [transcripts in Google Meet](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/12849897?hl=en) says transcripts are saved in a "Google Meet" folder, with a sub-folder for each meeting. Two other routes lead to the same document:

| Route | Who it reaches |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| An email with a link | The host, co-hosts and whoever started the transcript |
| The Calendar event | Invitees in the host's organisation can open the attachment; with more than 200 invitees in the host's organisation, only the host, co-hosts and whoever started it |

Longer meetings take longer to process, so the email can arrive some time after the call ends.

## How do you download it?

Open the transcript document, then at the top click File, then Download, and choose a format. Google's page on [downloading a file](https://support.google.com/docs/answer/49114?hl=en) covers the menu, and its [Markdown page](https://support.google.com/docs/answer/12014036?hl=en) the .md option.

| Format | Good for |
| ------------------- | ----------------------------------------- |
| Microsoft Word | Editing, quoting, sending to someone else |
| PDF | A fixed record to file or attach |
| Plain text | Loading into another tool |
| Markdown and others | Notes apps and wikis that read them |

If you only need it in your own Drive, File, then Make a copy, keeps a Doc you control, unless the owner has turned copying off.

## Why can't I open or download the transcript?

Usually because the document belongs to someone else. Work through it in this order:

- **No email arrived.** Only the host, co-hosts and the person who started it are emailed. Check the Calendar event instead, or ask.
- **The Calendar attachment will not open.** You are probably outside the host's organisation. Google says invitees in the host's organisation can open it; it does not say outsiders can.
- **You can open it but Download is missing.** The owner may have [stopped viewers downloading, printing and copying](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2494893?hl=en). Ask them to send a copy.
- **There is no transcript.** Nobody started one, or the account's edition does not have the feature; see [Meet transcription on a free Gmail account](/answers/transcribe-google-meet-on-a-free-gmail-account/).

For the first three, the fix is the same: ask the organiser to share the document, or send a copy, by meeting and date.

## How does TrackHeros keep a transcript?

Separately from Google's. The TrackHeros notetaker joins the Google Meet call as a participant, waiting to be admitted if the meeting requires it, and the transcript, recording and notes are filed under the client in your own TrackHeros workspace rather than in the organiser's Drive. You read the transcript in TrackHeros, with speaker names; it is not offered as a download. The minutes can be copied for email or, on paid plans, exported as a PDF ([pricing](/pricing/)).
