Answer
Can you transcribe a Google Meet call on a free Gmail account?
For people on a personal Google account who look for Transcribe in Google Meet and cannot find it: which Google plans include Meet transcripts, what captions do and do not keep, how to get a transcript when someone else hosts, and how a notetaker bot such as TrackHeros transcribes a call whichever account hosts it.

On a free personal Google account, Google Meet has no Transcribe option, and the reason is the plan rather than a setting you missed. This answer is for freelancers, consultants and anyone on a personal Gmail account who needs a transcript of a Google Meet call. It branches from how to transcribe a Google Meet call, which covers Google's feature in full.
Which Google plans include Meet transcripts?
Certain paid Workspace editions. Google's page on using transcripts with Google Meet lists Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus and Workspace Individual. A free personal Google account is not a Workspace edition, so it is not on the list.
The plan that counts is the host's, because the host's side starts the transcript and it is saved in the organiser's Google Drive. If a client hosts on Business Standard, the call can be transcribed, by them, whatever account you join with. Editions change, so check Google's list rather than this one.
Can captions stand in for a transcript on a free account?
Not as a record. Captions help you follow a call while it runs, but Google's page on live captions says "the captions are turned on only for you", and it describes no way to save them. They also decode one spoken language at a time, which matters if your meetings mix languages; why captions pick one language explains it.
How do you get a transcript when someone else hosts?
Ask the host, before the call. If they are on an eligible plan, they, a co-host or, with Host management off, anyone in their organisation starts the transcript, and the document lands in the organiser's Google Drive. Google says the email with the link goes to the host, the co-hosts and whoever started it, so a guest gets the document only if somebody shares it. Ask for that too: "Could you share the transcript from Thursday's call with me?"
How does a notetaker transcribe a call on a free account?
As a participant, so the host's plan does not matter. The TrackHeros notetaker joins from the Google Meet link like any other guest, waits to be admitted if the meeting requires it, and records the call. It collects Meet's captions for the speakers' names. After the call it works out which language was spoken and, where the captions will not do, runs an audio pass over the recording. The transcript is always in English, from any of close to 100 spoken languages, followed by the summary, decisions and action items with owners and dates.
One limit comes from Google rather than the notetaker. Google's Meet requirements page says that without a Google Meet subscription you can host "meetings with 3 or more participants for up to 60 minutes". Google does not say whether a notetaker counts, so if the host has no subscription, plan as if a one-to-one call with the bot ends at the hour.
It joins the Meet and Teams calls on the calendars you connect for your clients, or a single call whose link you paste in. The host still decides whether it gets in, and the people in the call should know it is there; telling clients you use an AI notetaker has wording. TrackHeros is in early access, and its plans, including a free one, are on pricing. More on the Google Meet notetaker page.
